What is Computed Radiography?
Computed Radiography or CR is a replacement for film radiography using digital technology. In this technique, in place of film, digital image is produced using imaging plates. These plates are exposed to radiation in similar manner as film. Latent image obtained is processed using scanner to convert to digital form. The generated image is suitable for viewing on high resolution computer monitor for interpretation.
Once the image is recorded and stored, the imaging plates can be deleted for reuse. The imaging plates can be used up to over 1000 times depending on usage. Stored images can be viewed, interpreted and transmitted anywhere.
Overall, CR radiography eliminates film, processing chemicals, dark room and much bigger savings on exposure times. In near future film radiography is completely being replaced by CR and digital radiography – CR systems. Images produced are of top quality than film radiography. Can be viewed on monitor for precise defect sizing.
Computed Radiography Procedure
In Computed Radiography, an imaging phospor plate is exposed to x-ray or gamma radiation. Isotopes can be Iridium 192 or Cobalt 60. Radiation energy is thus stored in digital form in the imaging plates. These plates are passed through scanner for reading latent image. A finely focused laser beam stimulates the image plate leading to emission of blue light. This light is in proportion to radiation received at a given area on the plate. A photo multiplier, special reading device converts this light into analog form. An analog to digital converted converts digital image enabling to store in viewable format.
These CR generated images can be viewed, evaluated on high resolution monitor. Highly convenient for precisely measuring the flaw size. The plated can be erased using the scanner and reused 800-1000+ exposures.
At RT labs, we have the capability to go up to 50 micron laser CR system which is industry’s best resolution achievable.
Advantages using CR
There are great number of advantages using CR. Following are few listed.
- No need of darkroom, unlike film radiography
- Considerably less exposure time
- Imaging plates are reusable. Life 1000+ exposures
- Enhanced viewing of images on high resolution computer monitors
- Facility for localized viewing, sizing of flaws
- Soft copy. Easy to share, transmit, retrieve.
- Cost effective
- Better sensitive than films
CR Applications
At the faster pace, CR is replacing film radiography. In the next couple of years, the CR may sure replace film based radiography. Below are few applications currently in use.
- Oil and Gas for testing of critical weld joints
- Aerospace for inspection of casting and raw materials
- Electronic industry for inspection of brazed soldered joints
- Automobile castings
- Failure analysis
- Research & Development
