What Is Positive Material Identification?

Normal practice for verifying chemistry of metals is done using destructive means such as Optical Emission Spectrometer. This requires to break or sacrifice the little material which cannot be reused or reassembled to the original stock. It is time consuming and expensive when compared to non-destructive means of testing such as PMI.

Chemical analysis using spectrometer cannot be easily performed on site due to the size, less favoured conditions onsite. Also, sample preparation needs time and involves cost. Therefore, such method/s cannot be readily applied on production materials.

Solution to this problem is providing chemistry using Nondestructive method/s such as Positive Material identification to verify the conformity of chemistry. This can be readily applied on the materials under production. Also, in-line examinations such as using electromagnetic techniques can be applied on to the production.

As normally standards specify a range of chemistry for each element, it is the duty of the manufacturer, user to verify the chemistry. Any deviation that exceeds the limits, will result in automatic alarm or buzzer for the production personnel indicating the problem. This enables the production team to initiate appropriate corrective action.

Accurate Alloy Identification Using XRF at our ISO17025 Accredited Labs

Portable spectrometers are now available from various manufacturers to determine the concentration. Avoiding time consuming methods of chemical analysis using conventional methods such as wet analysis. Thought PMI is not a true replacement for wet or spectrometric analysis, it is an invaluable tool for readily verifying the chemistry to check for confirming on actual materials.

As a result, there can be improved quality, yield, savings on time, labour costs and material. Thus reducing even field failures, accidents and litigations.

Role of PMI in Modern Manufacturing

Mistakes in material identification can lead to costly failures, shutdowns, or safety hazards. PMI helps in preventing:

  • Use of substandard or wrong material that may not be suitable for the given application
  • Weld failures due to incompatible filler metals
  • Non-compliance (NC) with project specifications or international codes such as ASME, API, ASTM or EN, ISO

Positive Material Identification is a well established analytical materials testing and materials identification technique used throughout industrial plant as well as within the metal assembly and component manufacturing industries. It guarantees a material’s elemental composition as required for safety compliance and quality control.

Currently most alloy manufacturers, petroleum refineries, and other businesses responsible for alloy grade verification use technology to quickly and easily separate various grades of stainless steel. The most common, portable, and easy-to-use tool for this purpose is a handheld XRF (x-ray fluorescence) analyzer. These instruments are highly accurate at determining the chemical composition of alloys, and thereby their grade. Moreover, they do so within a matter of 5 seconds or less for most stainless steel grades, without significant sample preparation, and safely.

Another advantage is that these measurements are non destructive in nature and hence the material composition is not compromised and the customer can go ahead with using the same material.

Onsite testing can help determine whether a system or solution meets the design criteria. When trying to establish the in situ performance of unknown construction types, onsite testing is crucial. In order to verify installation workmanship, on site testing is essential.

Conventional Spectro Vs PMI

Positive Material Identification PMI Service

Conventional spectro method is capable of directly giving you the chemistry in terms of percentage of each element present to determine the grade of material. This method, primarily examines outermost surfaces of the material under investigation.

For proper and accurate results usually the sample is grinded sufficiently deep. Surface preparation is major challenge in spectrometer method. Whereas, Positive Material Identification (PMI) method directly gives the results in similar manner as spectro.

Main advantage is PMI does not virtually damage the material. It consumes only superficial layer or some time there is no absolute damage to the material. Above all, it is field portable method that can be used for testing materials chemistry directly on the shop floor, workshop or even in process during maintenance inspection of plants and structures. Without obstructing or impairing their current or future use.

Both spectro and PMI are useful for quantitative analysis of chemistry whereas Electromagnetic or thermo electric methods are qualitative in nature.

Need of Reference Standards

For PMI testing, small reference standards to be used for standardization before commencement of use. Such samples are supplied by many manufacturers with calibration traceable to National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in India. Such samples do not reflect the heat treatment or processing conditions of the reference sample. Just to check the PMI equipment accuracy before use, they are valuable and accurate enough for field application.

Testing Techniques

PMI Testing Services Onsite in India

PMI testing is performed using

  • X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry (XRF)
  • Laser Induced Breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)

XRF method is one of the most widely used for analysing chemistry of materials using PMI method. The major limitation of this method is, analysis Carbon and other elements having atomic number less than 22. Leading to difficulty in announcing the confirmation of grade for carbon steel as per specifications.

About XRF method for Chemical analysis

In X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) method, an x-ray tube, or gamma ray source of low energy (1 to approximately 50keV) excites the materials and generate characteristic X-rays. These x-rays emitted from the material are analysed for the wavelength and intensity to correlate with element and its quantity.

Recent development in electronics and computer technology resulted in portable, reliable XRF equipment capable of delivering accurate results. Equipment can be used onsite testing applications.

PMI Equipment at Trinity NDT Labs in Bangalore

PMI Chemical Analysis Using XRF for Castings

Various manufacturers use, patented technologies to give better and more accurate analysis. Trinity NDT uses ‘SciApps’ a US based XRF method of PMI testing. Up to 18-20 elements can be analysed in a single instance. To confirm the grade of steels, aluminium and alloys, at least 8 to 10 elements are needed.

Our PMI equipment weigh around 1.4kg, making it ideal for onsite inspection of material sorting, chemical analysis. The equipment can transfer data, test results using Wi-fi, USB and Bluetooth to other devices.

At Trinity NDT Labs in Bangalore, Our XRF machine for PMI testing can analyse upto 32 elements. Plus 22 precious metal elements for thorough identification of grade. Equipped with over 500+grades library it is unique service we deliver to our customers. Addition elements also can be added tailored to customer requirements.

Carbon Content Using PMI Testing for Steels

Major limitation of PMI testing using XRF technology is Carbon element analysis. XRF method currently does not respond well for elements below atomic number 22. Carbon content cannot be determinedaccurately. Latest technologies such as ‘Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) developed for analysis of Carbon with great accuracy.

Surface Preparation for Chemical Analysis

The test specimen shall be ground to remove any oxide layers and corrosion products from the surfaces. Austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 300 series and other non corroding alloys are exception to this.

XRF source and detector shall rest on the sample or be positioned with respect to the sample in a precise and repeatable manner. Out PMI equipment using XRF works from -12 deg.C to 54 deg C at 25% duty cycle.

Lightening Fast Speed of Testing

Sorting of materials based on chemistry using electromagnetic and other qualitative methods may take as few as 5 seconds per sample excluding sample preparation and handling time. Whereas for PMI, quantitative reading may take from 10 seconds to a maximum of 200 seconds depends on make and model.

Even in some cases readings can be obtained as little as 3 seconds. Our PMI Equipment, capable to deliver lightening fast results. In general, we analyse each sample for three results and average them for final declaration of test results.

PMI Testing Using XRF Technique
Advantages

  • Can be used for qualitative and quantitative analysis modes
  • Gives reasonably accurate test results for element analysis of common alloys
  • Potable PMI equipments are easy to carry and use onsite
  • Direct Digital readout, can be read by anyone without much training

Disadvantages

  • Same Preparation is important that can affect the test results
  • Elements with atomic number less than 22 (Examples: Aluminium, carbon, silicon, Sulphur and Phosphorous) gives inferior results using portable equipment
  • Potential Radiation Hazard using X-ray technique
  • Alloying element having close match with each other may give erroneous results

Selection of Right PMI Method

Selection of appropriate chemical analysis method for alloy identification is not just limited to sensitivity and accuracy.

It is more complex process. It primarily depends on Chemical Composition, accuracy level, Part Size, Weight, location, Quantity, Surface condition etc.,
