Limit on acceptable Residual magnetic Field

On receipt of material, NDT Demagnetization operator analyses residual magnetic field. Establish proper technique, for de-magnetization in consultation with ASNT Level III. Perform demag procedure using suitable demag equipment. Repeat the procedure if residual field is exceeding allowable limits. Checks specification from the customer. Before delivering, inspector ensures the field acceptable and prepares the test report. 

Customer specifies acceptable limits for residual fields post De-magnetization. As a general practice, residual magnetic field for non critical components shall be less than +5 Gauss. For aerospace, critical parts the limit is +3 Gauss. Checks performed at random locations on entire surface of the part. A test report is prepared and delivered along with the component while delivering.

De-magnetization - an Overview

For ferrous materials, Magnetic particle testing used for detecting flaws. Example: Automobile Shafts, Rotors, Blades, Gears, Sprockets, weld joints, plates, and Aircraft components. Parts magnetised to find flaws, fatigue cracks during in-service inspection. 

After MPI testing, parts may retain residual magnetism. Ferrous materials such as bars, rods kept for prolonged periods in earth North, south direction may acquire magnetic field. Components subjected to arc welding, high amperage cables passing over the materials while welding sometimes causes induction of currents and residual field.

Some materials are easy to magnetize and easy to de-magnetize. Other materials may be difficult to magnetize. These may retain large amount of residual magnetism. Hysterisis curves are used to evlaluate the magnetic properties of ferro magnetic materials. 

 Mild steels usually do not retain much residual fields, thus need not be de-magnetised. 

Reasons for demagnetization

Ferro magnetic materials are subjected to magnetic fields during manufacturing, storing, handling and transporting. Such materials are detrimental for use as they may have un-acceptable residual fields. 

Reasons for de-magnetization are below. If answer for any of one or more of the following is ‘Yes’, de-magnetization is required.

  • Residual field will affect instruments sensitive to magnetic fields such as aerospace parts
  • Parts are to be plated or painted. 
  • Components are to be subsequently machined
  • The part is to be re-magnetized at a lower level than the initial magnetization step
  • Component tested will be moving parts
  • When parts are to be electric arc welded

De-magnetization Not Required

De-magnetization needs time and cost. In exceptional cases, it is not required to perform de-mag. 

For any one or more of the following, answer is ‘Yes’ then you need not demagnetize the parts.
 
  • Post cleaning is not a stringent requirement and all inspection materials need not be removed;
  • The component if finished and No external field exists
  • Parts are of low retentivity, e.g. low carbon plate;
  • If the material tested consists of big structural parts, e.g. welds, large castings;
  • Component is to be heat treated above curie temperature
  • When the part is to be re-magnetized in another direction at the same or higher level than the original magnetization;
  • If the part will be magnetized on a magnetic chuck
