Why de-magnetization ? – An Overview

Magnetic particle testing or inspection or magnaflux testing of engineering components is predominantly used on Ferrous materials such as Automobile components, Shafts, Rotors, Blades, Gears, Sprockets, weld joints, plates, other precision engineering components and Aircraft components and structures to find surface and subsurface cracks, linear discontinuities, fatigue cracks during in-service inspection of process plants and machineries. However, some materials are easy to magnetize and easy to demagnetize. However, some materials retain large amount of residual magnetism causing issues during usage or service life of the component. It basically depends on Hysteresis / Magnetic characteristics of given materials.

Also some engineering materials are subjected to magnetizing fields during manufacturing, storing, handling and transporting. Such materials are detrimental for use and use of such material having exceedingly more residual fields are strictly prohibited by international codes, standards and OEM specifications. In the following cases it is essential to demagnetize the parts.

  • Components/Structures to be plated or painted. Adhering particles would interfere with these processes;
  • When the part is to be re-magnetized at a lower level than the original magnetization step;
  • When parts tested will be moving parts. Particles of metal or magnetic particles could cause failure;
  • When parts are to be subsequently machined;
  • When parts are to be electric arc welded; this prevents possible arc blow;
  • When the residual field will affect instruments sensitive to magnetic fields, e.g., aircraft parts.

About De-magnetization facility at TRINITY NDT

We are The American Society for Non-destructive testing – ASNT, USA corporate partner. NDT Labs at Trinity NDT are NABL ISO 17025 accredited and recognized worldwide by leading OEMs. The gigantic NDT Labs spread over 16000 sqft of area are specialized for NDT and Welding inspections. Demagnetization facility is equipped to deliver the components with residual magnetic field well within the limits prescribed by the specifications. Out NDT inspection professionals are well experienced in demagnetizing tough to remove magnetic fields both onsite and at our Labs in Peenya Industrial Area, Bangalore, India. Shafts or component of large in size can be easily handled using 5 Tonne EOT shop floor crane. The state of art demagnetizing equipment will do the task of demagnetization in most efficient and effective way. Calibrated residual gauss meters are used to check the effectiveness of demagnetization at the end and test reports are issued accordingly.

Measuring Magnetic field strength

Calibrated magnetic field testing equipment, Instrumentsare available for measuring magnetic field strength of strong permanent magnets used for various engineering applications. Test report is issued with magnetic strength measured in Gauss or Tesla. Rely on our experts for the professional services on Non-destructive testing and Welding.
